Four Things To Keep In Mind When Buying A Tractor

Posted on

Whether you're in need of a compact tractor so that you can make landscaping easier around your yard, or you need a bigger one to plow the land on your farm, there are some things you'll want to know before making the purchase. Here are four things to keep in mind when buying a tractor.

Where to Buy Parts

Whether you buy a brand new tractor or a used one, it's inevitable that you're going to have to buy tractor parts. If you live in a larger community, there will most likely be a tractor supply store in town. If you live in a smaller, rural area, however, it might be harder to get the part you need. No matter where you live, you can always find tractor parts for sale online.

How Much Horsepower You Need

The amount of horsepower you need depends on what type of work you'll be doing with your tractor. There are generally three different types of horsepower to think about:

  • Engine horsepower - the amount of horsepower the engine requires without anything attached to the tractor
  • Power take-off (PTO) horsepower - the amount of power that gets generated at the shaft of the PTO
  • Drawbar horsepower - also known as draft HP, this is the amount of power that gets generated to the attachment by the tractor

If you're not sure how much horsepower you're going to need, it's always better to have too much than not enough.

What Types of Attachments You'll Use

One of the best things about owning a tractor is all the attachments there are that can make your work much easier. Tractors can be used to till the soil, push snow, mow a lawn, rake a field, and all kinds of other jobs. Some of the most common tractor attachments include:

  • Post hole diggers
  • Scrape blades
  • Front buckets
  • Rotary tillers
  • Fertilizer spreaders

Some things you'll want to keep in mind when purchasing your attachments is how easy they are to put on and take off and what type of hitch your tractor needs.

What Kinds of Comfort and Safety Features It Has

If you're going to be spending a lot of time on your tractor, you may want to ensure it is going to be comfortable. This includes having a comfortable seat as well as having other luxuries such as a cab, air conditioning, a radio, and power steering. Besides thinking about your comfort level, you'll also want to think about safety and ensure your tractor has working hazard lights, a seatbelt, and other safety features.
