Stop Right There: 4 Signs Your Brakes Need Repair

Posted on

When it comes to the most important part of your car, it's hard not to think of your brakes. After all, it's up to your brakes to stop your vehicle in time to avoid an accident. The health of your brakes is immensely important when it comes to your safety and that of your passengers. Here are four common signs that your brakes are in need of repair.

You Notice a Squeaking Sound

There's nothing worse than a car that squeaks loudly as it comes to a halt. But did you know this can be an indication that your brakes need checking? That's right, squeaky brakes are a sure sign that your brakes are working overtime when it comes to stopping your car. Be aware of how your car sounds as you brake and take note of any noises that you feel are getting worse with time, all of which can be a sign your brakes are in trouble.

It Takes Longer to Stop

Another sign that your brakes are starting to falter is when your car takes longer to stop once you apply your brakes. This could be an indication that your brake pads are thinning and are in need of replacement. Left unchecked, your brake pads could completely wear down to the point of no longer functioning properly, leaving you at risk of not being able to apply your brakes in the event of an emergency stop.

Your Brake Light Turns On

This might seem like a no-brainer, but a sure sign your brakes are in need of a checkup is when your brake light turns on. If this happens, make it a priority to get your car checked out as soon as possible rather than putting it off. Even if you feel that your brakes are in proper working order, you'll want to play it safe and get them checked anyway. Your brake light will typically indicate when your brake fluids are low but could also point to a larger problem involving your hydraulics.

Something Feels Off

When you apply your brakes, be aware of how they feel when your foot presses down on the pedal. If you notice any strange sensations such as pulsating or a softer feel, this may indicate a serious issue regarding the health of your brakes. When brake fluid gets low, brakes can sometimes take on what can be described as a spongey feel in which there is less resistance as you push in the pedal. When in doubt, stay on the safe side and take your car in to get your brakes checked out.
